How to Choose the Right Blended Yarn for Knitting and Weaving

A blended yarn is two or more fibers spun together so the final yarn carries the strengths of each, while covering the weakness of any single fiber. Choosing the right blend is the difference between a product that sells and one that complains.

Why blend at all?

  • Polyester + cotton (CVC / TC): polyester brings strength and shape retention, cotton brings comfort and breathability. The workhorse of everyday apparel.
  • Polyester + viscose (TR): viscose adds drape and a softer, silkier hand; polyester keeps cost and durability down. Ideal for suiting and dresses.
  • Wool + acrylic / nylon: wool gives warmth and a premium feel; the synthetic cuts cost and adds pill resistance and strength.
  • Nylon plating on socks / yarn: adds abrasion resistance exactly where it wears first.

Matching blend to end-use

  • Next-to-skin apparel: favor cotton or viscose-rich blends (soft, low irritation).
  • Outerwear / workwear: favor polyester-rich and nylon-containing blends (strength, weather).
  • Home textiles: polyester blends for wash durability; wool blends for warmth.

Cost vs. performance

A higher synthetic share lowers price and raises durability; a higher natural share raises comfort and price. There is no "best" blend, only the right one for your price point and market. Tell us your target FOB and hand-feel and we will propose a composition that hits both.
